For sale is an absolutely STUNNING Rolex Explorer II (16550/16570) Tritium ‘porcelain’ dial with vivid yellow patina – 100% original, never refinished or relumed. Also included is a matching handset for 16570 (no GMT hand included) and free watch (see last photo : )
Similar to the R-series 16520, these porcelain dials were only found on the very earliest Rolex Explorer’s – evidenced by the special eggshell effect of the dial and the “dimensional” look of the text, as if the writing were ‘floating’ above the lacquered surface. Tritium dials (SWISS – T>25) came with Explorer II’s from 1989 – 1998 and are highly prized by collectors – especially when the lume plots turn yellowish in color giving off the impression of corn kernels, or “Chicchi di Mais” as the Italians call it. As more and more dials from early Explorer II’s are replaced with luminova dials (SWISS MADE), these early Tritium dials are becoming more scarce and more sought-after by the collecting community – often accounting for the difference between a $6k run-of-the-mill 16570 and a >$9k STUNNER.
You would be very hard-pressed to find a similar dial in such pristine condition – with such puffy and perfect lume (just look around).
